Immutable continues its partnership with Warner Bros with the release of Immutable X’s web3 mobile game Blocklete Golf from Discovery Sports.
Acceptance of Warner Bros web3
Last month Warner Bros added a web3 quiz game to create a Bleacher Report Watch-to-Earn (B/R W2E game.) In addition, Warner is expanding its partnership with Immutable by migrating Blocklete Golf from the Flow blockchain to Immutable X. The migration is reportedly due to “fast transactions and gas-free NFT mining backed by Ethereum’s robust security and decentralization.”
Andrew Sorokowski, vice president of global business development at Immutable, commented that
“[Warner Bros]dedication to expanding the reach and early adoption of web3 proves that decentralized solutions are on the fast track to mass adoption – offering millions of people new and exciting ways to interact with entertainment media while retaining full control over their digital assets.”
In addition, Yang Adia, senior vice president of digital operations and innovation for WBD Sports, called the move to Imutable “a natural choice for us.”
Blocklet Golf
Blocklete Golf is an interactive traditional mobile golf management game that allows players to guide golf characters through virtual links in PvP matches and tournaments. The game includes evolved Play and Earn modelwhich has become the standard for many games looking to move away from the Play-to-Earn model that saw Axie Infinity rise to fame during the last bull run.
CryptoSlate announced the move away from Play to Win back in April 2022 in an interview with Polkastarter co-founder Daniel Stockhouse who argues that web3 games should not focus on a purely “play to win” model. He said,
“I don’t think it should be about earning per click within the game[…] It doesn’t provide value, which doesn’t make for a good world or a good economy.”
Blocklete Golf looks to set the game apart from other web2 mobile games by allowing gamers to collect, train and trade unique NFT-based avatars or use them to compete with others.
Blockchain Adoption
The Flow blockchain was the first choice for several US-based companies, such as the NBA and UFC. However, the rise in activity on the Immutable X blockchain and adoption by companies such as Warner Bros indicates further appreciation of decentralized technologies from legacy web2 brands.
While Flow presented a proposal for a permissionless smart contract in July 2022it relies on a native scripting language called Cadence, unlike Immutable X which uses the more widely used Solidity. In addition, cross-chain connectivity can be seen as a reason to explore alternatives to Flow, given that Immutable X is an Ethereum Level 2 solution that can potentially integrate with other EVM chains.
